Epimedium X rubrum
Red Barrenwort
Description
Epimedium X rubrum is a semi-evergreen perennial that is grown as a ground cover, reaching 1' tall and 1.5' wide. Foliage is 1' long, red colored when first appearing, turning green and then red again in fall. Flowers, borne in showy clusters, have crimson inner sepals with pale yellow or white petals, and upward-curving spurs, appearing in spring. It does well in full to part shade with moist, fertile, well draining soil. Once established, it can tolerate dry shade. This plant has a mounding or clumping habit. It is deer resistant and not considered invasive.
